Hot take but instead of CGI, anime should go back to more retro style animation, like we should totally bring back bold, dynamic animation and imitation cel-shading and bold outlines and rich details and unique designs because that’s what the modern anime scene needs more of and I just know that retro style animation would look absolutely amazing with modern technology
#my brainpoops#truth be told I’m having a little too much fun using retro style flourishes in my art lately and it’s making me think things#well I suppose a big part to play in the rise of cgi and the decline in 2D animation has to do with overproduction being a big problem#especially with the whole thing with seasonal anime and increasing demand for content#anime has become more of a product than anything and because of that shift in attitudes from the audience and major studios in accordance#the focus has shifted from crafting a work with effort and passion#to creating a product to be consumed#and that consumption and the desire to consume puts more strain on studios to keep up and continue making anime#you only have to look at not only the decline in overall visual quality in a lot of modern anime nowadays#as well as animators actively coming out and voicing their struggles#to see that#as well as the matter of homogeny and overall same-ness#with more deeper and more unique stories either becoming sleeper hits or being swept under the rug in favour of more mainstream fare#look it’s just my personal feelings/opinions#let’s just say it was the golden age of anime for a reason#and I don’t think we’ll ever hit that peak again#okay rant over#but I guess the same could be said for a lot of modern media too#90s anime

there’s obviously a LOT wrong with animation as an industry, but it’s just so funny that disney tries soooo hard to INSIST (lie) that 2D is like less profitable or marketable or engaging or beloved by audiences (they say as an excuse to take advantage of ppl they can pay less) when like the most one of the most popular entertainment industries in the entire world with an unflinchingly devoted fan base is 2D Japanese anime that gets shitttt on whenever a studio even ATTEMPTS to use CGI for a scene or two 😭
#like obviously the anime studios are also VERY taken advantage of by ppl who own the means of production#& there’s a LOT wrong there#but the fact that Disney tries so hard to manipulate ppl into thinking 3D cgi garbage is like good#is soooo funny in the face of Japanese animation that is so beautiful & fun to watch when done with care & thought

idk who on the gk anime team passed away but it was def not the storyboard director/sound director/voice acting director, because they're still horrible. sad! well i'm not watching this garbage
#how were the csm people given almost nothing like cut out paper dolls to work with but the end product is so gorgeous and cohesive#but the gk people were given a ready masterpiece that only needs an experienced hand to translate 1:1 to animation and they make... this#how you gonna work worse than a tiny ass broke studio who never did anything but cgi. die

Gonna bring up Doctor Who here, they have some amazing character effects:
Look at these gorgeous creature effects. This is from an episode in 2010. Over 13 years ago. And guess what? All 100% practical effects:
Actors sat in makeup & prosthetics for 4-5 hours to achieve this, and the result is beautifully lifelike and will most likely still look beautifully lifelike 50 years from now.
Another example is the "Catkind" aliens, which featured in episodes from 2006 and 2007, which are approaching 20 years old now:
And don't get me started on the Judoon from 2007, fully prosthetic masks with animatronics. And they still hold up better than virtually all contemporary CGI:
Marvel movies have completely eliminated the concept of practical effects from the movie-watching public’s consciousness
#also the CGI in most films these days - including MCU from about 2012ish onwards - is lower quality than what is technically possible#bc of the lack of union studios pay them less give them less time and hire fewer people#so the end product is lower quality than what coud have been done#and of course because it's cheaper they force more and more of the VFX to be CGI instead of having a balance#or a base of practical effects that are enhanced and or polished with CGI

Animation has a long history that extends back to the ancient world. It has existed in numerous forms, from the pottery of the ancient Greeks to the ocular toys of the seventeenth century to computer-generated imagery (CGI) of the twenty-first century. Us humans have found numerous ways to utilize this animation, be it animated movies for children or create an alternate reality, thus, having found a way to bring imagination to life. One such highlight for this century is the use of animated videos in marketing.
Modern animated videos utilize vibrant colors, captivating characters, and imaginative settings to grab viewers’ attention. Therefore, it becomes the perfect tool to keep your audience engaged and hooked on your content for the longest possible time. These videos evoke emotions through relatable characters and compelling narratives, fostering a stronger connection between the audience and the brand.

I want to be excited for the live action Little Mermaid so badly
The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie. Anyone who knows me knows I'm obsessed with mermaids as a whole and will watch any media that has them. Hell, I own my own tails and monofins. But every time I see a gif or a video for the new Little Mermaid, I cringe
(btw, this is NOT because of the casting. If you're against this movie because Ariel is black, you're a racist piece of shit and this post isn't for you)
My issue lies with the CGI. It just looks so FAKE. We've seen through the course of movies and TV shows that use it that CGI does not age well, and that's because technology is constantly improving. What was impressive in 2005 is not impressive in 2023 (Just look at Aquamarine, another movie about mermaids). And the CGI on Ariel and her sisters already looks fake and the movie isn't even out yet!
Compare this image from the trailer
To this screenshot from H20: Just Add Water (a TV show that came out in 2006):
You can see the details of the scales in the second image
The first image is flat. Sure, it's colorful, but it's flat. It's fake. Halle herself is the most beautiful and alive part of the image, because everything else is fake
The difference?
H20 had costume designers, ones specifically trained in mermaid tail making, HAND CRAFT every tail on the show. All of the scales were hand laid, all the tails molded to fit the actors/actresses perfectly, painted by hand
Let's even look at someone with no affiliation to TV or movies:
This is Mermaid Linden, a very well known (in the mermaid community) professional mermaid. You can tell her tail is not as high quality as the ones made for H20 (though it's still a VERY expensive tail) - but it still looks like it's a part of her. You can still see the details. Because professional mermaid tails are also all handmade and molded to fit each person. Even if they don't lay every individual scale, good professional mermaid tail makers are very meticulous about what they do.
This is what happens when Disney refuses to pay practical effects artists. We could have had beautiful, handmade tails that would look real on screen for decades to come and could be reused for promotional purposes - instead, they're underpaying and overworking their non-unionized employees to make CGI tails that don't even look real now.
(to be clear, I'm not shitting on the artists. As I said, they're being underpaid and overworked. This is not their fault)
And before anyone comes and says "But swimming in those is difficult!" Absolutely it is. You should never swim in a professional level tail (or even just fabric tails) without practice and training. Which Disney could have given the cast if they were willing to PAY people (the cast of H20 [a TV SHOW] literally learned how to be mermaids on set. It's been done before)
Disney's "Live Action" needs to be rebranded as "CGI with some real people tossed in" because that's all any of these remakes have been, and it's exhausting when I look at what we could have had.

Upcoming Magical Girl Projects
Magical girl fans are finally eating good after years of starvation. So good, in fact, that I decided to make a list of magical girl projects in development.
The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies - The most imminent of these projects, since it's premiering only in a few days. It's the story of the forbidden romance between the magical girl Byakuya Mimori and Mira, a high-ranking official of an army trying to take over the world.
Mermaid Magic - In a new western magical girl show from the same studio as Winx Club, Princess Merlinda, with her friends Sasha and Nerissa in tow, ventures to the human world in order to find a way to save her homeland of Mertropia from the ghost pirate Barbarossa and his monster horde. Dropping on Netflix next month.
Acro Trip - One of several new magical girl series coming out in the Fall 2024 anime season, Acro Trip follows Chizuko Date as her efforts to increase appreciation for her idol, local magical girl Berry Blossom, takes her down a "dark path filled with strange folks."
Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. - Kana Sakuragi is having a hard time finding work, botching over 15 different job interviews. However, her luck changes when a series of events lands her a job at the magical girl company Magilumiere.
The Story of the Girl Who Couldn't Become a Wizard - The third of the magical girl anime coming out in October, MahoNare for short tells the story of Kurumi Mirai as she tries to become a wizard anyways after failing to get into her school's magic division.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie - Walpurgisnacht Rising - The fourth PMMM movie, which will pick up where Rebellion's massive cliffhanger left off. It's currently set to come out sometime later this year.
Cute High Earth Defense Club Eternal Love! - The magical boy series is getting a new movie in winter 2025 as part of the celebrations for its 10th anniversary. While the movie will "consist entirely of new scenes that will be newly drawn," exact plot details are unknown. (Added August 7, 2024)
Mahou Tsukai Precure: Mirai Days - A new installment in the Precure franchise, Mirai Days will serve as a sequel to Mahou Tsukai, the thirteenth season. Even though it's premiering early next year, specific plot details are currently unknown.
Princess Session Orchestra - A TV original coming next year, Princess Session Orchestra is based on a concept by Akifumi Kaneko, one of Symphogear's co-creators. The land of Alicepia's peace is destroyed when monsters called Jammerwocks attack, prompting a trio of young girls to step up the plate to protect the realm.
Winx Club - The western magical girl classic is getting a CGI reboot. While comments by Iginio Straffi imply that certain characters who were introduced later in the original series (such as Roxy and Nabu) will appear earlier, no specific plot details have been revealed so far. The series is coming to Netflix late next year.
New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt - Panty & Stocking is getting a second season after over a decade that's coming out sometime next year with no specific plot details revealed yet. (Added August 7, 2024)
Project Symphogear Next - A new Symphogear movie was announced late last year. However, no further details have been revealed.
Hua Xianzi: Zhi Mofa Xiang Dui Lun - A co-production between Tencent Video and Toei Animation's Shanghai branch, this anime is being billed as a "remake" of Lunlun the Flower Fairy. That being said, promises of "a fresh story and characters" make it sound more like a reboot.
Studio Pierrot's new anime - Studio Pierrot, which has made a variety of magical girl anime from Creamy Mami to Tokyo Mew Mew, has announced that they're creating a new TV original magical girl anime. No specific details have been disclosed, but the caption for the teaser image ("I want you to sing once more...") implies that it'll be a magical idol anime.
Lolirock season three - After Lolirock's second season ended with a cliffhanger all the way back in 2017, it seemed like the story would never get a proper conclusion. However, the series's creator and director, Jean-Louis Vandestoc, announced on his Instagram in 2023 that creative meetings for a third season have begun.
Magic Knight Rayearth revival - TMS Entertainment is making a new Magic Knight Rayearth anime in honor of the franchise's 30th anniversary. Unfortunately, it's currently unknown what the format will be.
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card season two - The sequel to the magical girl classic is getting a second season that will adapt the rest of the manga.
Magical Girl holoWitches - A multimedia project starring six VTubers as fictionalized versions of themselves who work as both streamers and magical girls who save people when they get trapped in the magical Holocas World. There was a four minute extended trailer in May, but the anime's proper premiere date is unknown.
Ojamajo Doremi 16-20's - An adaptation of Ojamajo Doremi's light novel sequel series, which follows the girls as they grow from being in their mid-teens to early 20s. Interestingly, the format for the adaptation (TV show, movie, or streaming series) will be based on the reception of a music video featuring the girls as adults.

Don’t go watch Agatha All Along because Aubrey Plaza is actively thirsting over Kathryn Hahn in it. Watch it because Patti-confiscates-your-phone-at-her-performances-fucking-Lupone is in it. Watch it because it’s a genuinely comprehensible story that leaves you with questions after each episode. Watch it because women are no longer “domesticated.” Watch it because gay rights in a traditionally cishet studio production that is not about coming out. Watch it because it touches on grief. Watch it because sometimes it freaks you out. Watch it because The Ballad of the Witches Road. Watch it because Kathryn supposedly spoke to a witch on a call once every week to emulate witch authenticity. Watch it because there was a minimal use of CGI. Agatha All Along was not marketed as a lesbian show. Don’t confine it into that when it is soooooo much broader and more cinematic.
